Sociology/ Anthropology Sponsor PC Alumni Immigration Panel Event
This past September 26th, 2024, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology was thrilled to invite several Providence College alumni back to campus for a panel event, “Working with Immigrants in an Election Season: A Conversation with PC Alumni.” The panel was made up of five alums; Christina Roca ’21, Pedro Aleman ’17, Vania Pereira ’17, Jose Maza ’21, and Susie Mendl ’17. Dr. Kara Cebulko of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology planned the event in collaboration with Caroline Lamarine, a current PC senior with a Global Studies major and Sociology minor.
In her opening comments, Dr. Cebulko spoke about how one of the motivators in organizing the panel was to help students explore what careers were available to them within the field of immigration; “Caroline and I were talking about [all] the students at PC who think about working with immigrant populations, but the only thing they can think about is ‘I can be an immigration lawyer’, and that’s all they know.” Dr. Cebulko went on to identify the two goals of the panel; providing options about other career paths within the field of immigration, and to examine more deeply what it means to work with immigrant communities with an election going on by looking at “how the stakes feel higher, and how does it impact the kind of work [the panelists] do and the communities they work with.”
All in all, the panel was a huge success with incredible student and faculty turn-out. The department is incredible grateful for the support of the co-sponsoring departments; the School of Arts and Sciences, IDEI, Latin American and Latina/o Studies, the Feinstein Institute, and the Departments of Global Studies, Political Science, Public and Community Service Studies, History & Classics, Women’s and Gender Studies, Black Studies, and World Languages and Cultures.
