“As a second-year dental student, I can honestly say that my background as a sociology major has been a huge asset in my journey. When I was in undergrad, I didn’t fully realize how much my sociology studies would influence my approach to dentistry. But now, working directly with patients, I see how valuable it is to understand social dynamics, human behavior, and the importance of clear communication. Sociology gave me a foundation in understanding people—why they act the way they do and how social factors can influence health behaviors.

In dentistry, I’m not just working on teeth; I’m connecting with people from all walks of life, building trust, and helping them feel at ease. That’s where my sociology background really shines. It’s given me the tools to look beyond clinical care and think about each patient’s overall well-being and the social factors that might be impacting their health. For anyone interested in healthcare, I’d say don’t underestimate the power of understanding people, those skills will serve you well no matter where your career takes you. “
